Cycling

This region of Portugal is ideal for cycling, whether you want climb after climb taking you to 3500ft in the Serra da Estrela national park or if you want an easier route towards the Atlantic coast, all abilities will benefit from cycling in a comfortable yet challenging environment.  The surrounding countryside is breathtaking with tree-lined roads, long climbs and descents and hardly a car to be seen, perfect for riders who are uneasy around traffic.  There are also plenty of café stops en-route providing excellent coffee and cakes in the most beautiful surroundings, giving you a true taste of Portugal.  On Saturdays and Sundays we have the option of meeting up with the local cyclists and joining their training rides. In addition, if you wish to bring your mountain bike, there are endless off-road trails to explore, directly from the doorstep of Delucci Retreat.
Altitude Training
Cycle from Delucci Retreat to Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain range in Portugal. This challenging ride to the summit is just over 100 kilometers!

We can arrange an overnight stop-over which is also great for training and sleeping at altitude. Packages can be arranged in advance for this amazing trip.

Alternatively, hardcore riders can cycle there and back in one day. But be warned - this is a big challenge!

The climb to the very top of Serra da Estrela is 2000m with an average of 10% but this can be more severe depending on what route you take up the mountain. The roads are smooth and almost traffic free. The rugged landscape is spectacular and has to be seen to be believed. This is where every year the Tour of Portugal's hardest stage takes place.

 Running

The running is challenging and can be tailored to meet all abilities.  As with the cycling, routes begin directly from the guest house.  You can run from 5 miles to 20 miles without seeing a soul, just the occasional deer.  The running routes take you through beautiful eucalyptus and pine forests with wide trails and breathtaking views.

Swimming

In the local town 10 minutes away there is a 25 metre indoor pool which is open to the public. It is fully laned and you can swim in the evening or daytime for less than €2.

There is a river-fed outdoor pool, approximately 40 metres in length, cut into the natural stone of the mountain and surrounded by forest. It is free of charge and only a 10 minute drive from the retreat or 35 minute bike ride (on-road) or 40 minute bike ride (off-road).  It is also possible to run there on or off-road making it perfect for brick training.  There is a restaurant open during the summer months and shaded picnic areas which are great for relaxing after your swim.

There are many other lakes and river beaches (Praia Fluvials) within driving distance.

Sports Massage

We can arrange for a professional sports massage therapist to visit during your stay.  Francisco specialises in deep tissue massage and also provides ultrasound and taping if required.
